One of the chief values of history is entertainment. It is fascinating to learn about the UMW of the
past. We enjoy listening, seeing, and reading about what has happened in the past. Many in your
congregation will be captivated by the stories of people and events in your local UMW history.
History can be a source of inspiration. As you learn more about those who created the heritage of
which we are heirs, we may be inspired to give thanks for their lives, and we may pledge to follow
their example.

As a local unit historian, you will:

Keep copies of minute from all UMW meetings for the year.

Keep records of all UMW members and officers for the year.

Encourage UMW officers to keep accurate unit records

Keep records of pins or awards given out for the year.

Keep record of pledges and donations given for the year.

Keep copies of programs and pictures of your local unit had for the year.

Records and historical materials include all documents, minutes, journals, diaries, reports, letters,
pamphlets, papers, manuscripts, photographs, books, and any other documentary material,
regardless of form or characteristics.

Place all material in a binder and /or Container and label it for that year.

Finally, we know that history's real importance is that it helps us understand who we are. It is a clue
to our own identity. Your local UMW unit location, its organization, its outreach programs, and
countless other facets of its life are all rooted in the history of the congregation. By reflecting on the
past, we can better understand who we are and determine the future directions of the United
Methodist Women.
